Cloud computing has experienced exponential growth in recent years as companies and individuals take advantage of its flexibility, mobility and low barriers to entry. ECO2Clouds, a project supported by the FP7 program of the European Commission, aims to introduce ecological concerns into the development of cloud infrastructures and cloud-based applications. Examples of ecological concerns including energy efficiency and CO2 footprints.

The overall goal of the project is to advance scientific knowledge and technical artifacts, in order to couple the functional and economic advantages of cloud computing with measures aiming at a more careful consideration of its environment impact.

ECO2Clouds will provide a challenging and innovative approach to Cloud computing service through different actions:

  1. Developing mechanisms to collect eco-metrics data and quantify the environmental impact of operations  at infrastructure and application level;
  2. Developing  a comprehensive approach to multi-cloud application deployment;
  3. Developing evaluation mechanisms and optimization algorithms.

The project will run for two years from October 2012 to 2014 operating in an iterative cycle. After initial requirements gathering and design the preliminary testing occurred in the third quarter of 2013. The project is now conducting its second iteration of experimentation to extract and define further requirements.
